retirement

In this new special hosted by Paula Zahn, we learn that retirement in America is undergoing a revolutionary transformation. When our grandparents and parents retired, they could usually count on a handsome company pension, as well as Society Security and other benefits. Today, few workers in the private sector will enjoy a company pension. And today, Social Security and Medicare face growing funding issues. Americans are being told – every day and in increasing numbers – that they have the sole responsibility for producing income for themselves for a much longer span of retirement time.

Most people imagine dinosaurs lurking in warm locales with swamps and jungles, dining on vegetation and each other. But this NOVA documentary reveals that many species also survived and thrived in the harsh environments of the north and south polar regions. This program focuses on two high-stakes expeditions and the paleontologists who push the limits of science to unearth 70 million-year-old fossils buried in the vast Alaskan tundra.

Operating one of the world’s busiest international airports on a daily basis is like a carefully choreographed ballet. “Inside” takes viewers behind the scenes at one of the busiest airports in the world – Miami International. Moving on average nearly 90,000 passengers, more than a thousand planes and more than 5,000 tons of freight through the system in one 24-hour cycle involves the precise orchestration of numerous agencies and a staff of more than 38,000 people. But beyond this feat are the real security issues inherent in an industry defined by the legacy of September 11.  Tune in to the next episode of INSIDE Friday August 28th at 10PM on WVPT.

nature trees 1

It may be one of nature’s oddest couples: a tiny wasp that can barely be seen, and a giant fig tree, the sycomore, which shelters a remarkable menagerie of wildlife among its limbs. The wasp and the fig depend on each other for survival. Without the wasp, the tree could not pollinate its flowers and produce seeds. Without the fig, the wasp would have nowhere to lay its eggs.

The Queen of Trees  (click the link to see a preview) shows this delicate dance of survival in exquisite detail, including spectacular close-ups of the wasp’s remarkable life inside a ripening fig.  Sunday August 30th at 8PM on WVPT.

Ten years ago WVPT produced a documentary in remembrance of the 1969 natural disaster that struck the Central Virginia region and the Shenandoah Valley, and how Hurricane Camille dramatically impacted the lives of thousands of residents.

WVPT recently aired this documentary in remembrance of the 40th anniversary of the tragedy.  If you would like to own a copy of this documentary and in doing so support the PBS station that produced it click here.
